31 for 21: Twice Is Nice

This week my sister Charity and nephew Lex came over for dinner twice. For those of you who grew up with your family, you may take simple visits like these for granted. For you it may be just another visit. Or, like me you may realize how valuable these moments truly are.

Charity is my half sister. We have the same father in common. We met when we were around five or six years old and spent some great times together but when my biological mother became more ill and I was removed from her custody I also lost contact with my sister.

On a side note, so you may better understand, my biological mother is diagnosed with Paranoid Schizophrenia and a history of many other issues. There is a lot of on again's and off again's between her and I, pertaining to our relationship but I love her regards of our past. I take great caution when it comes to exposing my children to her life style choices but I realize that her choices are her own as is mine.

Anyway, Growing up I thought of my sister constantly. All I had was my memories of her and I and a picture. I often saw a child and wondered if it were in fact my sister but i never asked. It wasn't until about three years ago that I found her again. Ironically she only lived about ten minutes from me and had been for several years! However, neither of us knew that we were that close to each other.

Charity and I began contact again during her first pregnancy, with Lex and the timing seemed to be perfect. Now Lex is a little over two years old and Charity is expecting her second child! I feel honored to be the "big" sister and to be able to share these moments with her and her family. I feel blessed to have some biological family in my life whom I have an unconditional relationship with. I know that I can count on Charity and I hope that she knows that she can count on me as well!

Vada and Lex have become great pals this week.

Vada doesn't quite know what to do or to think about her cousins boyish ways but she is more than interested in him and I can tell that he feels the same way about Vada.

I love that Lex is comfortable being here.

The last time that Charity came over with Lex, he strutted in like this was his second home, as he should. I felt a rush of emotions as I watched him walk into the living room and begin playing.

This is what having an extended family feels like, its really, really heart warming.

Years went by and I always wondered what became of you. You were always in my heart and on my mind. I love you and look forward to all the years we will have together.
