Currently (12/11) Vada uses a few signs. She does Mommy, Daddy, Milk, Hi/Bye and up. However, the only sign that fully looks like it is being done correctly is Milk. That is why it is the first video to be posted.
As Vada grows and learns more "functioning" signs I will share them with you and I will also post the dates of each video with some info on how she has been doing with each particular sign.
This Video was taken on 10/2011. Vada was one year and seven months old. She has been doing this sign "Milk" for months but this was the first time that she had asked for her milk by using sign language and then she told me what she had in her sippy cup when asked.
Every now and again Vada will make sounds that's seem to be her speaking the word milk and there have been several occasions that she seems to verbally say "I want milk".
This video was taken on 1/19/12, and is of Vada doing the sign for "More". Vada was 22 months and seventeen days old.
The correct way to do "more" is by taking your thumb inward to touch your finger tips-- doing this with both hands, (kind of like making a shadow puppets head or a flat 'O' shape). Then you tap your finger tips to your other hands finger tips.
Vada does it by trying to use her finger tips but it looks either like one fist is hitting the opposite hands palm or she may also do it with two fists tapping each other (then it kind of looks like the sign for 'shoes'). Either way, I am posting it because she may not have the sign down to perfection but she knows what she is trying to do and we know what she is trying to sign and I think this is great!
Yesterday 1/24/12 was Vada's first time signing "bath". She was playing on the living room floor and I signed and spoke "bathe time". Then I pocked her up and the moment that we walked into the bathroom I again spoke "bath time and she took the hand that wasn't wrapped around my shoulder and rubbed it on her chest. I cheered and said "yes, its bath time!" and then I said "bath time" again. Today I again spoke and signed "bath time" and she quickly rubbed her hand on her belly. I cheered because she is getting the idea of what she is suppose to be doing for this sign. Then Justin picked her up and I tried to record her doing it and it turns out that she did it a couple of times more.
The correct way to sign 'bath' is by taking your hands into fists and then rubbing the on your chest, like your washing yourself. Vada uses one fist instead of both of them in the video but I think that is because she is being held. When she is on the floor or in the bath she will use both hands and either rub her belly or her chest. I am still trying to get a video where she uses both hands. Ill post that as soon as I get it.
Vada Signing "Fish" 2/27/12
Vada signing "fish" on 3/24/12
Vada signing "Daddy" or "Papa", she calls Justin, her father both names. This video was done on 3/21/12
Vada and Kiliegh doing the sign for "Poop" on 3/24/12
Vada and Kiliegh signing "please" together. This one is a work in progress. Vada actually does the sign on Kiliegh and not on herself. However, Vada will sign "please" especially when she wants something and doesn't fully know or remember how to communicate what it is that she wants. This video was done on 3/24/12
Vada signs "potty". This too is a work in progress. She is trying though. Her thumb should be in between her pointer and middle finger and her hand in a fist. Once you have your hand in that position you shake it back and forth. This video was done on 3/24/12.
Vada signing "hungry". I tried to get her to do the sign for "eat" but she wasnt having it. We worked on many signs this morning and I think that she was tired of it. So this one is of her doing "hungry". The video was done on 3/24/12
