Home Schooling Your Child With Down Syndrome

Are you a home schooling parent? Does your child have Down syndrome? If so, I really want to talk to you about your methods, resources and experiences. I am curious about the curriculum and what the required standards are that needs to be met.

Please, if you you are a home schooling parent and your child has Ds, please contact me. I have so many questions!!!

V (my youngest daughter, with Ds) is almost two and a half years old and when she turns three she is suppose to start her early intervention preschool. My older girls didn't start preschool until they were five and six and Illinois law is that they don't have to start until they are seven years old. I would like to keep V at home until at least six and work with her one on one in a structured setting, until then.

Our children are only children once but I know that with her having Ds, she does need that extra amount of help and educating. Im willing to do what ever I can to give her both! My husband on the other hand needs a little convincing with the homeschooling but with all of the right resources at my personal disposal I know that he too will agree that this is whats best for our daughter and maybe even my sanity!

So please, help a mother out. :)

Hello! I have to say your lil Vada is adorable! You have a beautiful family. I have two boys 9 & 7. My 7yr old is genetically enhanced too (:-) Ds). I began Homeschooling him half way thru his Kindergarten year. I now homeschool both my boys (1.5yrs now) and we are going into our 2nd full year. I absolutely LOVE it and wouldn't have it any other way. I would LOVE to share anything that I am doing or have found/learned with you. Please feel free to contact me at Heather@NDSCoalition.org with your questions or phone number or I'll email you mine. I know it's a tough choice to come to, and I struggled with it for some time. But once I took the leap of faith it has been so freeing and has brought such great joy in my heart as I get to know my boys more intimately and help them in their journey of learning. My husband also waivered but now believes passionately that it is the right choice for our boys (he still has days though LOL). It may not be the right choice for everyone, and it is definitely a sacrifice (well worth making in my opinion), but its the right choice for us. :-)

HUGS, Heather Haskin

My goal,is to homeschool Kamdyn, although I do plan to send her to preschool one or two days a week. Mostly because I want her to get her therapies. Otherwise, I would be taking her somewhere else anyway. She is 2 now too. You should look into the Down syndrome of Orange County resources and See and Learn for reading. Also, look for things by Sue Buckley. As far as curriculum, I plan to use the same Christian curriculum I do with. Y other kids, but we will focus more on sight reading, rather than phonics. There has been research that our kids learn to read better by sight reading, but still incorporating phonetic awareness. They are also visual learners, so everything should be as visual as possible.
