Can You Hear Me Now

People who have Down syndrome have an significantly higher chance of having issues with their ears and hearing in general. Some studies suggest that as high as eighty percent of those diagnosed with Down syndrome will have some sort of hearing impairment in their lifetime. Eighty Percent! In my book, that's huge! This is why it is important for us to keep up to date on Vada's hearing.

With that being said why don't you just go ahead and smack me on my hands right now because today was the first time since Vada was born that we have had her hearing checked. I know, I know.., real responsible, right.

Anyway, everything turned out to be fine. Vada did a great job while being tested and it seems as far as the test can tell everything is a-o-kay in the hearing department. Now, I don't know much about the screening that they did today and frankly i'm not overly concerned with Vada's hearing right now so I didn't do much studying on the subject, so I don't have much information to give you on it, not that it's not an important matter, its just not something that I am familiar with yet. (Im pretty for sure that I could have made that last sentence into multiple ones...)
I am just grateful that her hearing is not something that we have to be concerned with but I thought that it might be interesting for those of you who have yet to do the testing yourselves to see what it may look like for you... This was my first time ever to have any of my children tested this young so I didn't know what to expect. :)

And while we waited to be seen today, this is what V did to preoccupy herself...

The screening today was just that, a screening. She really should have an ABR done, which is the definitive hearing test.

Kamdyn has had some hearing issues. I did a post not long ago about the tests they do and how they work. There's two tests with probes that check different things and the behavioral test. If those check out clear and there isn't fluid in the ears, there isn't usually reason to pursue further. Kamdyn had tubes and still tested with mild hearing loss, so she may get an ABR so we can find out more information. She may have some permanent loss going on in left ear. We're still working through it all. She goes back soon. I'm glad Vada had good results.
